is it soup yet?

This is my favorite apron! I bought it here. I had read about a contest in Hobby Farms magazine about 6 weeks ago. You had to write a 300 word essay to win the apron. I thought, I don't have time to write an essay and hope that I win this apron, so I bought it!

fresh eggs!

The girls laid these eggs before noon today. If you buy eggs at a supermarket, you are not getting fresh eggs. I don't care if they are free-range, organic or whatever the carton says...they are not fresh. Most supermarket eggs are at least 3 weeks old when they are delivered to the store. I don't even have one egg in my frig that is 1 week old. If you notice on the carton, it doesn't tell you what day the eggs are laid on...it tells you a best by date. I don't know to many people who would actually buy eggs at the store if they knew when the eggs were actually laid. Beware if they are running a special on eggs...think about how old those eggs are! If you look on the end of the carton there is a number...that number is the day of the year that the eggs were actually laid. For example, if the number is 126, that means they were laid May 6th and that's if there were 28 days in February. Just thought I would post a little info. about eggs.

faces

I've been posting all my sketches on my flickr page, but I just love this little pig, so I decided to post it here too. Someday, I plan on having a pig!

yum!

We canned these pickles Saturday. They taste like bread and butter pickles...yummy! If you look on my Flickr, I sketched some cucumbers before we started the process.

This squash was hiding from us...DH found it this morning under some large leaves. The hens will enjoy every last bite!

giant tomato plant

That's DH standing next to an enormous tomato plant! People stop by all the time, asking how our gardening is doing so well and theirs isn't. I tell them it's the chicken poop!

first chemo hat

I read a book by author Sally Goldenbaum and in the back of the book was a pattern for a "chemo hat, so I decided that I would knit one chemo hat a month until November and then I will donate them to MD Anderson Cancer Center.

progress

I finished the body of my tea leaves cardigan last night...I'm hoping to start on the sleeves tonight. Kris is home, so she modeled the sweater for me.

Stack of squares for my blanket. I've been knitting a few a week...hopefully, I'll be finished with it by the Fall.

chicken talk...

I've never taken a picture of the hens when they are getting ready for bed, so last night I took this picture when they were trying to settle in for the night. I imagine them saying to each other, "that's my spot...move! or "I always sleep by the window! or "Move over your crowding me" and my favorite would be "You don't have to be a bitch about it!" No, I'm not crazy...I just have an imagination! lol

10k

Kris ran her first 10K Saturday morning. I forgot my good camera, so these pictures are not very good. I was having, what I call a "pre-senior moment". I've been posting more on my flickr than my blog lately.

three reasons to eat eggs

1) Better blood pressure: Your stomach converts some of the proteins in eggs into peptides that act like the active ingredient in blood-pressure-controlling drugs called ACE inhibitors.
2) Easier weight loss: People on a low-calorie eating plan who had two scrambled eggs and toast with jelly for breakfast lost 65 percent more weight than those who had a bagel with cream cheese in the morning. Why? Eggs are uniquely satisfying, so you don't feel the urge to overeat at lunch or snack time.
3) Sharper thinking: Eggs are a great source of vitamin B-12, nutrient that seems to protect the brain from age-related shrinkage. In one study, people age 60 and up who were even a little low on B-12 were three to six times more likely to have signs of brain atrophy compared to those who got plenty. This information was written in The Houston Chronicles "Heath and Fitness" this past Monday.

The picture is of my breakfast this morning. Two eggs from my hens, homemade bread toasted and strawberry jam that we canned about a month ago.

Egg your eggs!
